The Reklaws “Rek-ed” Anthem Performance at NHL All Star Game

What do The Reklaws and Fergie have in common ??? Well it was bombing on the international stage performing the national anthem. To say The Reklaws performance of the Canadian national anthem was at least okay would be lying. The brother sister duo from outside of Cambridge, ON were tapped to perform the anthem, in part as a way to promote their new single and like some artists attempt to do and make the anthem “their rendition” it did not go over well with people. The attempted a capella harmonies were off from the get go and struggled to find their footing afterwards, with many noting they couldn’t pick a key. Most attributed the off harmonies to  Jenna who was fixing her battery pack when Stu started singing, but Stu didn’t get off lightly either with some online pointed out the excessive over the top southern twang in Stu’s voice, accusing the duo of trying to appeal to US fans rather than the task at hand. Some have pointed out that with Bieber and Bublé as team captains one of them should’ve done the anthem, I’m pretty sure we would’ve taken Bublé “on shrooms” over this performance.

Social media can highlight greatness but will trash things at the drop of the hat with some have called it “horrible,” “one of the worst anthems I’ve ever heard,” and “borderline treasonous,” and hilariously “Kucherov level effort.” Some on X (formerly Twitter) called out TSN for putting out a video on the platform of the performance. The performance doesn’t have a YouTube video from either the NHL or the networks, which speaks to the performance.  The Reklaws retweeted possibly one of the few positive tweets from the performance, when I looked to see if they posted any thing about their performance.

Safe to say the CCMA award winning duo regret the decision to try to sing the anthem a capella, and the faux southern accent rather than perform normally with music behind them. They shouldn’t hold their breath that the NHL or any major league or team will reach out the duo for an anthem performance anytime soon.
