It’s been a minute since we got our last Smurfs movie. The last one was released in 2017. I really liked the direction of it too it was entirely animated and told a very Smurf-centric story.
This new movie seems to be taking notes from the first two Smurf movies by having the Smurfs travel to the human world. That could be hit or miss for me depending on how it’s done. The art style is different from what we’ve seen from the Smurfs in the past but I think it looks good. There is a lot of expression in the characters.
A new movie also means a new cast. A big one is Smurfette as she is introducing the whole trailer. Previously she has been played by Katy Perry and Demi Lovato. Now a new pop singer joins the ranks as Rihanna is voicing the iconic character. The movie is also set to feature new music from her as well. I’m curious to see her take on the character in the film and we do get a little taste of it in the trailer.
Overall I’m excited about it. The Smurfs are one of my sister’s favourite franchises so I know we’ll be chatting about it when it releases July 18th. If you want to see more check out the trailer below!
