A new Premier’s council will guide Alberta’s action in response to the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

The province’s Indigenous Relations Minister Rick Wilson, says it’s the “start of a journey” on addressing gaps needed to eliminate violence against Indigenous women.

“We’ve got our panel report in place and we can start working on the recommendations that they’ve put forward. Everything from creating culturally appropriate spaces for affordable housing, advocating for social services, addictions support and giving access to justice supports for indigenous communities.”

Wilson says one of their goals is on improving education, economic independence and infrastructure.

“Creating and expanding leadership education and training programs, and this isn’t just my ministry. We’re working across ministries. We’re bringing in Advanced Education and they’ve got some great programs, they’ve been helping a lot with funding for training programs, and just insuring that basic infrastructure is available so that we can meet the needs of Indigenous Women and Girls.”

Wilson says other things they want to improve include community connections, healing and cultural supports, and community wellness.
