I recently stubbled across a some scenes from an episode of Malcom in the Middle and it is one of my favourite clips involving radio on television. Now I know we had shows like WKRP in Cincinatti and I grew up with Radio Free Roscoe but this clip from season 4 episode 15 of Malcolm in the Middle “Garage Sale.”
The clip shows Hal finding his old radio stuff from college where he was “Kid Charlemagne,” the rebellious anti authority persona he used on his pirate radio set up, while getting ready for a garage sale. This inspires the return of “Kid Charlemagne” to the 3 block radius of his home and even the FBI.
The name of the character comes from the Steely Dan song about an illegal drug chemist. Funny enough Bryan Cranston would go on to play an illegal drug chemist in Breaking Bad.
