Migration!

Oh man…due to the writer’s strike, there have been a lot of movies shuffled around that may have come out around this time, but didn’t. This leaves opportunities for some films that may not have gotten to the big screen otherwise to get a bit of a spotlight. Butterfly Tale may fall into that category. It is a Canadian film that is done by a smaller studio. We follow the migration of the monarch butterflies with an interesting cast of characters. Patrick a butterfly with only one functioning wing, Marty is his best friend and caterpillar, and Jennifer is a butterfly afraid of heights. Together they make their way along with the rest of the flutter on the migratory journey and learn lessons about doing things your own way and overcoming obstacles throughout the story.

The visuals and animation looked good and the movie featured some great pop songs including one from Shawn Mendes. Although I do think the writing is where it fell through for me. There were a few times when I just hated the decisions the characters made and some of their dialogue was really goofy. When they were trying to be comedic I think it just fell flat for me, and I like bad jokes. Now I know this is a movie for a younger audience but I still think there are family-friendly movies that can appeal to everyone. This one I don’t think quite measures up.

Despite the fall through on the writing, it seems like the team was really passionate about the project. The character design and research that they put in are commendable. So, if you do want to check out more of the film you can see the trailer below.
