HFCRD’s Glenmary School Delays Start of Year

Most schools in the Peace Country are set to reopen on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, right after Labour Day.

But, in the case of Holy Family Catholic Regional Division (HFCRD)’s Glenmary School in Peace River, not so.

The division has announced that the start of classes have been delayed due to health and safety precautions regarding the school’s ongoing modernization.

“The decision to postpone (the first day) was made in the best interests of all students and staff under careful consideration of all options,” Superintendent Betty Turpin said in a news release. “We apologies for any inconvenience this may cause for families.”

Due to the age of the building, Glenmary’s modernization experienced lots of unexpected delays over the summer. As a result, health and safety reasons have prevented staff from working at the school this week, resulting in the modifications of the start dates.

Teachers will return on September 5, with orientation to go on Thursday, September 7, and the First Day of Classes to go on Friday, September 8. All parents and guardians have been notified of the change.

“We are very grateful to the contractor, Jen-Col Construction, and the many sub-contractors for working very hard to complete this project,” said Turpin.

An amended schedule was created so instructional time will continue to be above the amount required by Alberta Education. Any further changes will resulted in a phone call via Synrevoice message, as well as it being posted on the Glenmary School website.

As well, any student who has yet to register for the 2017-18 school year can do so at the HFCRD Central Office. Any questions or concerns can be addressed by calling 780-624-3856.
