Yesterday I took in the comedy movie 80 For Brady. The movie centres around a group of friends who became football fans after seeing Tom Brady on television and 16 years later they continue the tradition of watching him and the Patriots. They decide that since Tom is near retirement and it might be his last Super Bowl they need to go watch him play. The movie isn’t ground breaking and follows a lot of the old person gone wild clichés but the talented cast makes it work.
The movie thrives with its all star cast of Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Fields and Rita Moreno. The four icons carry the film creating some fun and hilarious moments. The four of them work well with a variety of different supporting cast members like Billy Porter, Guy Fieri and Ron Funches. The movie makes good use of the then actual Patriots like Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski. The comedy moments really come in at the fan experience and the party not to mention that Billy Porter helps steal the scenes he shares with the ladies especially playing poker with Rita Moreno’s character Maura, a widower who can secretly gamble that just roasts Patton Oswalt. Rita was the standout of the four ladies which to be the standout in that cast is impressive.
The drawbacks are that it isn’t something ground breaking given the talent involved that you would expect and that it starts really slow and takes it’s time to really pick up the pace. The movie doesn’t really tug on the heart stings in the moments it tries to, but does a decent enough job.
In the end it is a movie that I really wanted to watch and am happy I did. It is a good movie to lift your spirits and can just sit back and enjoy the simple enjoyable plot.
