A former MLA is looking to get back in the legislature.

Paul Hinman came to Peace River on Tuesday and had a chance to address a group of people as the former leader of the Wildrose Independence Party.

Hinman addressed the crowd focusing on the current UCP government and Premier Jason Kenney.

“We have a Premier who did not want to reign in the spending, he continues to grow government and fails to stand up for Alberta’s industries, as well as our rights and freedoms,” says Hinman.

Hinman also pointed to an incident where a hockey player in the Calgary area was arrested for violating public health orders at the time.

“They (officers) viciously attacked him and tried to take him down, and the way they treated him, you would think he was a high threat – I think it was insulting to Albertans.”

The former Alberta Alliance leader also took issue with the federal government taking passengers landing at airports to hotels to be quarantined.

“When the federal government brought the goons in to (I want to say) hijack Albertans as they were landing and taking them to a hidden hotel – our Premier failed to stand up and do anything,” he says.

Hinman also had strong words for Ottawa, who he says is on a mission to shut down the oil sands.

“The hydrocarbon industry is not in good hands with a Prime Minister that was wants to shut off oil and gas and vicious and open attacks on hydrocarbons and speaks like it is not enhancing lives.”

He told the group that he feels the only way Alberta will be treated fairly is if it becomes a sovereign nation.

“We cannot be controlled or taxed by Ottawa anymore, and who knows when federal police will come and take our guns,” mentions Hinman.

“Between the money that is sucked out of our economy that goes out east to be redistributed to buy votes, we need our own pension plan and if we do not take the proper steps to protect ourselves, Ottawa is going to destroy us as they want us to become a have-not province.”

Hinman also said he stepped down as interim leader on March 31 so he could pursue the position of party leader.

He also mentioned to the crowd that he is the only candidate seeing to be head of the party at this time.
