Mainstreet Paving Project Celebration – August 24, 2024
CAO Matthew Norbern provided Council with an update on Berwyn Mania, the upcoming event celebrating the completion of the Mainstreet Paving Project. Council and staff will be in attendance, volunteering and engaging with residents. The event takes place on August 24, 2024, from 1-3:30 pm. The celebration will include opening remarks by government dignitaries, bouncy castles, face painting, foam pit,  a bike and car show, the Tipsy Burro donkeys sponsored by Grimshaw Community Services, a wrestling demonstration sponsored by Berwyn Tigers Taekwondo, a FireSmart BBQ with the MD of Peace sponsored by TC Energy, and a coin pit sponsored by Ruel Concrete. Black Swan Helicopters will have a helicopter on site, and the Lac Cardinal Fire Department will have fire trucks on site for families to explore.

Alberta Municipalities Conference
Council approved registration to virtually attend the Alberta Municipality Conference taking place in Red Deer from September 25 – 27, 2024. The conference offers valuable programming such as breakout sessions, keynote speakers, resolutions, elections, and minister dialogue sessions. This event provides an excellent opportunity for networking, learning, and discussing municipal issues and solutions.

Park Naming Results
Council reviewed the results from the Park Naming Contest. According to the majority of votes from the community, Council voted to name the park the Berwyn Community Park. Council also voted to create a garden within the park and name it the Norm Allen Garden. The tally from the top three names provided by residents are Berwyn Community Park 41, Norm Allen Park 28, and Rod and Irene Crumb 22.

Council Approves MD of Peace Agreements
Council approved revised funding and fire services agreements with the MD of Peace.

Nurse Practitioner Attraction Plan
Council reviewed a proposal for the Village of Berwyn to recruit a Nurse Practitioner (NP) to live and work within the community and directed the administration to develop an NP Attraction Policy surrounding the initiative. The policy will include various recruitment incentives, such as reduced rent for housing and office space, relocation assistance, continuing education, and assistance with integrating into the community. Attracting a Nurse Practitioner to the Village would address gaps in healthcare services in the region, improve health outcomes, and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Council Approves Tax Instalment Payment Plan Bylaw
Council approved a new bylaw allowing for the payment of taxes in installments to be paid on the 20th of each month. This provides residents with the option to pay property taxes monthly, reducing their financial burden while potentially improving the rate of tax collection.

Council Approves Records Retention and Disposition Bylaw
Council approved the Records Retention and Disposition Bylaw, which outlines the guidelines and schedules for record retention and aligns with the Municipal Government Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
