Viersen With Concerns Over Liberal-NDP Agreement

Conservative MP’s are criticizing the agreement between the federal Liberals and the NDP.

Arnold Viersen, the MP for Peace River-Westlock, says it’s quote “a disaster for the country”.

“Fiscally, we now get the NDP fiscal policy and the Liberal ethics and so this is going to be a total disaster for the country. It’s not anything really new or unknown, it’s just that now they’ve formalized it. Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen the NDP and the Liberals be dance partners on a host of things and now it’s just more formalized.”

The supply and confidence agreement announced this week means the federal NDP will back the Liberals in all upcoming confidence votes for up to three years.

Viersen says this could have negative impacts on Alberta’s oil and gas sector.

“The NDP, they have their upcoming policy convention and one of the policies that they have at that convention is a no more pipelines policy. Given the fact that the Liberals are now fully engaged to the NDP, the policies that we see coming forward at this policy convention here in a few weeks will likely make their way into the Liberal government.”

Viersen also says the Liberals and NDP defeated a Conservative motion that called on the government to undertake measures to allow Canadian natural gas to be exported to Europe to displace Russian gas.
