The federal Conservative Party has introduced a bill called the “Safe Hospitals Act” to protect health care workers and first responders.
Peace River-Westlock MP Arnold Viersen says this bill is in response to some issues that have surfaced in BC over the decriminalizing of hard drugs in that province.
“This has caused major concerns for the nursing folks and other folks that are using the hospitals because as you can imagine, having people doing illegal drugs in the hospitals is not conducive to a good hospital experience. The Liberal government has just stood idly by and actually legalized this.”
The bill would end the federal health minister’s power to grant exemptions under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act.
Viersen has also recently seen a bill that he introduced pass its first key vote in the House of Commons.
Bill C-270, the Stopping Internet Sexual Exploitation (SISE) Act, received unanimous support from the house on second reading.
“While the Liberals spoke negatively against the bill in their speeches, they did end up voting for it in the end. It had a unanimous vote in the house of commons. It’s now off to committee and I look forward to hearing from witnesses who will testify about what they think the impacts of the bill will be and hopefully coming back to the house for third reading then off to the senate shortly.”
The SISE Act would require those making or distributing pornographic material commercially to verify the age and consent of each person depicted.
