Town of Peace River considering charging stations for vehicles

The Town of Peace River is exploring the possibility of adding electric vehicle charging stations in the area.

At Peace River’s Governance and Priorities meeting yesterday, charging stations were discussed and Mayor, Tom Tarpey says there is an appetite among council to pursue this.

“There is an expectation that there will be more electric vehicles sold,” says Tarpey.

“There is a need for more than just one EV station, you would need a number of them, I would think.”

Charging stations come in three levels with level 1 meant for homes so an electric vehicle can be charged overnight, while a level 2 charger can completely replenish the battery in 4-6 hours.

Tarpey says level 3 plugs would be best because according to the briefing note shown to council, a vehicle can be 80 percent charged within 30 minutes.

“If someone wants to make a business out of it, I think they would need a level 3 charger,” explains Tarpey.

“Level 1 is good for homes, and level 2 would be good for work places.”

According to data, the cost of installing a rapid charger would be around $130,000.

“Our preference is that a private investor, or someone in industry would come forward and turn this into a business,” states the mayor.

Tarpey also mentioned that the town does not have an interest in owning a charging station but land could be something that Peace River contributes according to the briefing note.
