  1. Peace Regional Police have issued tickets to a driver disregarding School Bus Signage.
    Last Monday, the school bus driver reported the driver passing the bus, with signs out and lights flashing. The License Plate was obtained and the registered driver received $1500 in fines.
  2. The Sagitawa Friendship Center in Peace River states that funding was not received from the Provincial Government to keep the Out of the Cold shelter in operation for the Spring, Summer and early Fall.
    The Shelter will re-open on November 1st.
  3. Premier Danielle Smith says the government has no intention of holding a referendum on Alberta separation, but did not rule out the possibility of a citizen-led petition ending up as a ballot question in 2026.
  4. Tax Rates have increased in High Level. A bylaw was passed to set rates to raise the over $7.5 Million dollars to fund the Operating budget.
    Subsequently, the combined residential Mill Rate will see an increase of 0.52, while the non-residential Rate goes up by 1.32.
  5. Northern Sunrise County is asking residents to “Count themselves in”. The County’s census is happening, however you will need Access Codes to complete the task.
    Codes were mailed on April 30, and if they aren’t received by May 7, then contact the County Office.
  6. The annual Women in the North Conference kicks off today. Conferences happen today in Manning and Thursday in Peace River. (Sherry Crawford Interview in separate story)
  7. Mental Health Awareness Week is this week in schools around the Northwest. (Sandra Mackenzie interview in separate story)
  8. High School football is being showcased this month, with the 9-a-side all-star game.
    Several players from Peace River, High Prairie and Valleyview will play on the North team, and Pioneers coach Mark Owens will coach. The game is May 18th in Lacombe.
  9. NHL playoffs tonight… Games 1 Edmonton is in Las Vegas, and Carolina is in Washington.
  10. The Toronto Blue Jays are on the West Coast to start a three-game set in Anaheim tonight. Jose Urena starts for the Jays against Tyler Anderson.
  11. Lots of sunshine is scheduled for the rest of this week in the Northwest. Today will be the warmest of the bunch, with highs in the low to mid 20’s.
    Lows tonight will be very comfortable at around 10 degrees. Temps will ease off a little, come later in the week.
