  1. Manning RCMP and partners were busy on Friday night conducting traffic stops.
    Over 160 drivers were halted on Hwy 35 in Downtown Manning and some were caught with various violations.
  2. Elections Canada states that around 68% of eligable voters turned out for Monday’s Federal Election. That’s higher than the 62% turnout in 2021.
    In the two ridings in the Peace Region, over 143,000 votes were counted in the Peace River-Westlock and Grande Prairie ridings. That is slightly higher than the 100,000 votes cast in 2021.
  3. While the adults exercised their right to vote on Monday, students in Northwestern Alberta School Divisions got to participate in a mock vote at school.
    Pupils participated in both the voting aspect, and the Polling Station aspect to experience democracy first-hand.
  4. Equipment has finally arrived and they’re ready to start production at the Smoky River Decortication plant in Donnelly.
    The last of the equipment arrived from Montreal recently, and CEO Avis Gagne says now, installation begins.
  5. At a recent Board meeting, the Holy Family Catholic Regional Division passed a motion to put the Old Grimshaw School Land back up for sale.
    Also, calendars for 2026 were approved, and joint meetings have been set up with the Peace River School Division on May 21.
  6. Alberta’s measles cases continue to increase, and some are calling for more access to vaccination against the disease.
    Alberta Health is reporting over 160 cases, most of them in the central and southern zones, but there are some still in the north.
  7. The Wheatbelt Baseball League has released their schedule for the 2025 season.
    Seven teams will play a 12-game schedule, witgh the first game being May 14, with Peace River in High Prairie.
  8. NHL Playoffs… Games 5 Montreal is in Washington, the Capitals are up 3-1. St. Louis is in Winnipeg, the series is tied 2-2. Florida is in Tampa Bay, the Panthers lead 3-1.
  9. The PWHL has expanded to eight teams with Seattle being announced earlier this morning.
    They join fellow expandee Vancouver, plus the original six being Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, Minnesota and New York in the League for the 2026 hockey season.
  10. The Toronto Blue Jays play the second of a three-game set at home to Boston tonight. The Jays are trying to rebound after giving up five dingers in a 10-2 loss last night.
  11. A mix of sun and cloud with a slight chance of showers is forecasted for the Northwest this afternoon.
    Highs are varied from 8 in the Mackenzie, to 13 in the Big Lakes, to 15 in the Peace. Lows tonight will dip to just below freezing.
    Temps will spike tomorrow and Friday to low to mid 20’s to round out the week.
