- Fire crews from Alberta Wildfire, Big Lakes County and the Sucker Creek First nation were busy yesterday afternoon dealing with a grass fire at Buffalo Bay.
Hwy 750 at the Bridge, south of Grouard was closed for a few hours, while crews were on scene. A dozen firefighters, plus choppers were present battling the blaze. - The Easter long weekend is upon the Northwest. That means a lot of travelling is taking place, as families visit loved-ones, and as the Easter bunny makes their rounds.
Whether taking a three-day, or a four-day weekend, motorists are being advised to travel safely, as highways are expected to be busier between tomorrow and Monday. - This weekend is also the start of Advanced Polls in the federal election. Polling stations will be open from 9am-9pm from Friday to Monday, to cast your ballot.
Locally, ten candidates are running in the two ridings in the Northwest. Check your Voter Card for your polling station. - In anticipation of the Federal election on April 28th, the federal leader’s debate in English is tonight.
The four major party leaders will take part, representing the Liberals, NDP, Conservatives, and the Bloc-Quebecois. - Residents in the Northwest might be doing some outdoor activities this long weekend.
However, wildfire officials are advising that with the dry and windy weather taking place, fire restrictions and advisories are in place for much of the region. - From the RCMP’s Weekly Wanted file, Police are looking for Latasha Marie Ducharme.
Her last known whereabouts was in High Level, as she’s wanted for activities in High Level and Bushe River. - A drug investigation in Valleyview is nearing completion in the courts. Four people were charged, after a home in the area was searched in January of 2024.
Mitchell Trottier was given jail time, Jordana Goodswimmer, and Gail Isadore have a stay of proceedings in place, and Brandon Lee Munro have his charges withdrawn. - An update on the court case involving a shooting in Fox Lake last June. Four people were charged in the incident, where long guns, body armour, and drugs were seized.
Stan Laboucan had his charges withdrawn, Luke Laboucan has a stay of proceedings in place, John St. Arnault had his charges withdrawn, and Dusty Laboucan paid a fine. - The North Peace Navigators have announced a new player signing, Noah Kinney a 17 year old forward from the Yukon.
A few other teams around the league have said they are working on dates for camps and ID skates over the spring and summer months. - The NHL will end the regular season with seven games tonight. No playoff implications at stake with all the spots accounted for and the matchups decided.
The league says a full playoff schedule will be announced at some point later today. - Lots of sunshine for the Easter bunny to make their rounds this long weekend in the Northwest.
Highs are generally in the low teens, except tomorrow, where a spike in temperatures will be seen.
The Mackenzie might also get some rain on Friday night, but for the most part, things are looking good, heading into next week.
