  1. Fire crews in Peace River were busy yesterday afternoon battling a brush blaze in the south end.
    No word yet as to the cause of the inferno, however authorities are reminding residents that with the terrain getting dryer, extra caution needs to be exercised.
  2. High Prairie RCMP conducted traffic enforcement in the area, trying to nab speeders.
    Many people were caught along Highway 2 in Big Lakes County, including one vehicle clocked at 206 km/h in a 100-zone.
  3. Peace River’s Town Council had discussion as their meeting this week around investments and savings.
    CAO Barb Miller suggested to Council in offering property tax incentives to stimulate non-residential construction and/or revitalization, redevelopment, or expansion.
  4. Miller also suggested that the elimination of the Carbon Tax will save the town over $80,000 this year.
    Miller stated the savings could change with policy adjustments, but it could impact municipal budgets.
  5. She also stated that design work is underway at the new Town Hall, now that cleaning, service to elevators, and compilation of office furniture and equipment is done.
  6. The Provincial Government is downplaying the current Measles outbreak, saying it isn’t dire enough for the public to be addressed.
    Health Minister Adriana LaGrange didn’t discuss the call for a vaccination plan, and Chief Medical officer of Health, Dr. Mark Joffe doesn’t think public information is needed yet.
  7. The Provincial Government has seven new flood map studies underway for future knowledge of where it’s safe to farm, build, and prepare for emergency situations.
    In the Peace Region, maps for Rycroft and Chateh are in the works, because of the tributaries near the communities, that feed the Peace River.
  8. With Spring in full swing, residents are venturing outdoors, and are starting to meet up for reasons like Trade Show season.
    Mighty Peace GM, Powersports and RV are among the businesses using the Springtime to network, and take part in events, like the Northern Alberta Expo. (Peter Herritt interview in separate story)
  9. A group of Alberta Sheriffs say they support the UCP plan for a new provincial police force – but they don’t want the force split up to do it.
    Bill 49 includes the creation of a Crown corporation that would operate a future independent police force made up of about 600 Alberta Sheriffs trained as police officers.
  10. Two Canadian teams hit the ice in a 10-game NHL schedule tonight. Vancouver is in Colorado and Winnipeg is in Dallas.
  11. For the second time in their history, the Grande Prairie Storm are going to play for a Canadian Jr. A hockey championship.
    The Storm beat Whitecourt to win the Northern Conference, and with Calgary winning the South, and the Canucks hosting the tournament, the Storm are in.
    The Storm hosted the Nationals back in 2004.
  12. The Toronto Blue Jays wrap up their four-game set at Fenway Park in Boston this afternoon. Chris Bassitt starts for the Jays against Walker Buehler.
  13. Golf’s first Major starts today in Augusta Georgia. The 2025 Masters Tournament goes with four Canadians in the field.
    Corey Conners, Nick Taylor, Taylor Pendrith, and 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir.
  14. This afternoon looks fantastic in the Northwest with sunshine and low to mid teen temperatures.
    Skies cloud over tonight with rain falling overnight, 5 mm in the Peace and Mackenzie. Tomorrow will be cooler and wet, especially in the Peace and Mackenzie.
