  1. HAPPY APRIL FOOL’S DAY!
  2. Northern Sunrise County and wildfire officials were busy yesterday on the East Hill in Peace River.
    Prescribed burns and Wildfire training was taking place, in anticipation of Spring weather and the season.
    Crews around the Northwest are expected to conduct more burns to combat potential fire hazards in the coming weeks.
  3. Eyes of officials are remaining on the Peace River near town right now. Ice Advisories are still in place, as Break-up is anticipated this week.
    Temperatures are warming up this week and could get into double-digits by Thursday. Meanwhile, the Ice Advisory has ended on the Heart River, near Peace River.
  4. Today is the first day of the Canadian Carbon Tax being scraped. Savings of up to 18 cents per litre of fuel are being shown at the pumps.
    Before today, the price to fill up was between $1.50 and $1.75 per litre in the Northwest.
  5. The carbon tax ending today means the savings at the pumps could be partially offset by a bump in prices at the liquor store.
    The federal alcohol excise tax is going up by 2% and a new tax from AGLC is also being implemented on ‘high-value’ wine – with bottles valued above $25 seeing a 15% increase.
  6. $15 million dollars is being put towards project planning, which includes conducting facility and functional assessments of rural hospitals.
    The first phase of planning will evaluate places like the Health Center in Valleyview, the Northwest Health Centre in High Level, the Peace River Community Health Centre, and the Central Peace Health Complex in Spirit River.
  7. The first phase of a plan to reduce waste and save Alberta taxpayers money by reassigning some recycling responsibilities is set to take effect today.
    The government says the Extended Producer Responsibility initiative aims to encourage companies to come up with waste-reduction strategies and to create products that are more recyclable or reusable.
  8. The North Peace Hockey League is taking a lot of good things out of this past season.
    Micheal Mercredi, the President of the League, says they’ve been able to build on some momentum to help grow the league’s fanbase. (Interview in separate story)
  9. Five Canadian teams hit the ice in a 10-game NHL schedule tonight…
    Edmonton is in Las Vegas, Calgary is in Utah, Florida is in Montreal, Buffalo is in Ottawa, and Winnipeg is in LA.
  10. The Toronto Blue Jays continue their series with Washington at Roger’s Center tonight. Jose Berrios starts for the Jays against Trevor Williams.
  11. Snow will fall in the Northwest until this afternoon… Highs are around the freezing mark, with lows between -10 and -15 tonight.
    The fun is later this week, when skies clear off, and digits skyrocket, to the point where the Peace could hit 23 on Sunday. (No Joke)
