  1. Getting more health professionals in rural areas is rural areas is something the province is continuing to work on.

  2. The Alberta Government has announced 33 new Nurse Practitioners are practising independently in communities across the province.
    67 Applications were submitted to the Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Program, with 56 approved.
  3. The Northwest was spoiled last year with a warm winter, but this year will be a different story.

  4. Canadians will receive a temporary tax break on essential items, children’s clothing and diapers, restaurant and pre-prepared meals and common stocking stuffers, along with a one-time $250 rebate.
  5. A bomb cyclone pounded Vancouver Island, coastal B.C. and the Pacific Northwest. A low pressure system that has a pressure drop of at least 24 millibars in 24 hours or less classifies as a “bomb cyclone.”
    Sustained wind speeds in the 70 to 100 km/h range were reported and some areas had gusts closer to 150 km/h.
    The storm knocked down trees and downed power lines. At least two people have been reported dead following the storm.
  6. Rock band Our Lady Peace, golf star Mike Weir and actress Tonya Williams are among those set to be inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame next year.
    They will join Juno-winning guitarist Liona Boyd, pioneering cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Tirone David and War Child Canada founder Dr. Samantha Nutt.
  7. Over 300 players coaches and parents are descending on Peace River this weekend for the Provincial 2A Boys Volleyball Championships at Glenmary School.
    12 teams are present for the tournament, including La Crete and the hosts from Glenmary. A champion is crowned on Saturday.
  8. Three Canadian teams are in action in the NHL tonight… Minnisota is in Edmonton, The Rangers are in Calgary and Vegas is in Ottawa.
  9. Week 12 of the NFL season starts tonight with Pittsburgh in Cleveland.
  10. The sun is trying to peak through the clouds for the rest of this week in The Northwest. Highs this afternoon are still cool at around -15, but the wind is still biting.
    Chances of flurries are also remaining this week with lows tonight quite varied from -14 in the Big Lakes, to -21 in the Peace, to -25 in the Mackenzie.
    Snow is expected this weekend.
