  1. Peace Regional RCMP have dealt with a number of thefts of, and from vehicles in the first two months of 2024.
    In January, 18 vehicles, one license plate, and three attempted vehicle thefts have occurred. In February, 19 vehicles and four attempted vehicle thefts happened.
  2. Calls to the police in the Smoky River Region were up by 12% in 2023.
    McLennan RCMP says that traffic collisions, traffic violations, and suspicious activity were contributing factors.
  3. Freson Bros. has been awarded the Creative Choice Award in Traditional Media.
    They were also given Honourable Mentions in three other categories, from the National Grocers Association at the Creative Choice Awards.
  4. Proposals for a new Splash Park in High Prairie have been presented to Town Council.
    One plan will be chosen, and an approach to Big Lakes County is in the works for the facility, planned for an area around the pool.
  5. The Alberta government has narrowed its plan to attract skilled workers by offering a new tax credit that will only apply to skilled tradespeople.
    Jobs, Economy and Trade Minister Matt Jones says the “Alberta is Calling” program will offer a one-time $5,000 refundable tax credit to tradespeople who move to the province in 2024 and file that year’s taxes in Alberta.
  6. For the first time in months, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith met face-to-face with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Calgary.
    Trudeau was on a trip to Alberta on Wednesday, stopping in Calgary to announce details of a dental care investment and then speaking with seniors in the city.
  7. Statistics Canada says households owed $1.79 in credit market debt on average for every dollar of disposable income in the fourth quarter.
    The federal agency says seasonally-adjusted household credit market debt as a proportion of household disposable income fell for the third quarter in row.

  9. The Toronto Blue Jays continue their Spring Training schedule today with a game against Pittsburgh. The Jays open the regular season March 28th in Tampa Bay.
  10. Lots of sunshine is in the forecast for the Northwest today, with digits getting warmer as the week progresses.
    Temps could nudge double digits, starting tomorrow, and even get as high as 18 in Peace River on Sunday.
