Peace River Energy Project Receives Alberta Utilities Commission Approval
Peace River, Alberta – Peace Energy Cooperative (PEC) is pleased to announce a significant milestone in the development of the Peace River Energy Project (PREP) with official approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) to proceed with the project’s construction. This approval, received on March 19, 2024, marks a pivotal moment for PREP, coming after a period of uncertainty caused by the Alberta moratorium on renewable energy projects.
The Peace River Energy Project, a 5 MW grid-connected solar farm, is a community-led initiative spearheaded by PEC. The project will play a crucial role in advancing sustainability efforts in the community while creating economic opportunities and supporting local job growth.
“We are thrilled to receive the official approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission to move forward with the Peace River Energy Project,” said Don Pettit, Executive Director of Peace Energy Cooperative. “This milestone is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of our team and the unwavering support of our community members.”
The approval from the AUC comes after an extensive review of the project’s feasibility, environmental impact, and compliance with regulatory requirements. With the moratorium on renewable energy projects lifted, PREP is now poised to enter the next phase of development, the launch of an investment share offering to Peace Energy Cooperative’s 635 members.
The Peace River Energy Project will be western Canada’s first cooperatively owned and operated solar facility, funded by Peace Energy Cooperative and community member investors. Anyone can become a member of Peace Energy Cooperative and invest in this community-owned project.
With the AUC approval in hand, PREP is on track to make a significant contribution to the transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy landscape in the British Columbia and Alberta Peace River Region.
