Spirit River hockey player Dayle Ross says her game has gotten better playing in college hockey.

Ross is in her third season at St. Cloud State University and says her “hockey IQ” has grown the most in her time there.

“In my first year, I felt like I didn’t know where my place was quite on the team being on a new team and having older players and trying to follow in their footsteps. Having a good coach helped me develop more and made me see that I could maybe play beyond university kinda helped me to push and become a better player.”

One of the biggest stories in hockey recently is the launch of the new Professional Women’s Hockey League.

Ross says she’s been to one of the games for the Minnesota franchise and says it’s cool to see several players she’s played against and looked up to being part of the new women’s league.

“It’s pretty cool to think that like “if I was a boy my dream would be the NHL” and even when I was younger, I was like “I wanna play in the NHL” but I know that wasn’t realistic. Now it seems realistic. I can keep playing and make a profession out of it which I think is pretty cool.”

Ross also believes that having the PWHL established can help motivate more young girls in minor hockey to furthering their careers.
