The provincial government has introduced a bill aimed at improving safety for roadside workers.
Transportation Minister Rajan Sawhney says Bill 5, the Traffic Safety Amendment Act, will require motorists to slow down to at least 60 km/h when passing a stopped roadside worker vehicle with its lights flashing.
“We have found over the years that there have been significant collisions with snowplows and drivers on the roads and we know that there are other highway maintenance workers as well who have had near misses. We took a lot of the facts from the public and from our industry partners as well who basically said that we needed to do more.”
Sawhney says this will address some concerns that have brought up by industry groups.
“The road builders have advocated for this and they said we have all kinds of protections in place for construction workers. There’s traffic safety plans that have to be made by construction workers. But what about the highway maintenance workers and what about those who are operating snowplows? They didn’t have those same kinds of protections.”
We talked to the Minister about the bill, you can find that full discussion below.
