The women’s shelter in Fairview is one of several across Alberta getting some funding help from the provincial government.
Children and Family Services Minister, Searle Turton, says this is part of a plan to create more spaces in women’s shelters.
“This includes an immediate $5 million stabilization amount that will go out to mostly rural shelters around the province. This really came about as a result of the conversations that we’ve had with women’s shelters at the roundtable and as well as when I was travelling around the province about the need to help support these incredible facilities and organizations.”
Turton says several shelter’s he has met with faced capacity challenges and increased demand for services.
“They’ve told us clearly what they were needing in order to keep women safe and we answered that call and provided a road map about how over the next couple of years we’ll continue to increase that operational funding. We’re still going to have a large amount of conversation with women’s shelters and look at ways to make is easier for them to do their business.”
The provincial budget also includes a $5 million increase in annual funding to women’s shelters over the next three years.
