The Alberta government has introduced the Every Kid Can Play program to help kids overcome the financial barriers to getting involved in sports.

Joseph Schow, the Minister of Tourism and Sport, says it’s an opportunity to get more kids active in recreation activities.

“We’re making sure that in these difficult times of affordability and inflation that parents don’t have to make those tough decisions between buying groceries and paying the mortgage or get their kids to play sports. This is a great opportunity to get more kids active, out of the house, being physical and being healthy.”

A total of $8 million is available to help eligible families to offset registration fees, and for grants to non-profit organizations.

Schow says it’s building off the success of their Return to Play grant.

“It entitles kids to have access to up to $350 to cover registration fees for organized sports around the province. What’s really nice about it as well is the parents applying to this through KidSport, the parents aren’t paying out of pocket. They’ll work with KidSport and register online with them and KidSport will work with the non-profit organizations to get those fees covered directly.”
