Province Critical Of Proposed Federal Electricity Regulations

Proposed clean electricity regulations from the federal government have been seeing some criticism from the Alberta government.

The feds want to have a net-zero electricity grid by 2035, but Alberta environment minister Rebecca Schulz says doing that here would be quote “near impossible”.

“It doesn’t take into account that Alberta doesn’t have hydro-electricity. Given our reliance on natural gas for our baseload, this is a huge risk. Also, what it really comes down to is affordability and reliability for everyday people. The cost to do this, some estimates have it at $1.7 trillion.”

Schulz says their own plan to have carbon neutral electricity by 2050 is more reasonable.

“When we look at these federal electricity regulations that are put forward. There’s a couple of things really that are concerning to us. One is really around just some of the requirements that they have built right within the regulations. This is based on technology that has not yet been tested anywhere in the world.”

Schulz says there’s also concerns from the province on the reliability of the power grid.
