The province has announced expanded funding up to $27.3 million to help Ukrainian evacuees access settlement, language, housing and financial supports.

Rajan Sawhney, the Minister of Trade, Immigration and Multiculturalism, says a total of $7 million over three years will be for continuous settlement and language supports.

“This funding would help settlement agencies and immigrant serving organizations meet an increase in demand for services. It would ensure Ukranian newcomers have the skills and language supports needed for successful settlement and integration in our province.”

Sawhney says this funding will build upon existing language and employment supports with more evacuees expected to arrive in Alberta.

Jeremy Nixon, the Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services, says Ukranian newcomers are now able to apply for Alberta’s Rent Supplement Program.

“This support for Ukranian newcomers is made possible with the $16.7 million increase to the program. $6.8 million of which was made available late this fiscal year, and if passed, Budget 2023 would provide a remaining $9.9 million for the rent supplement program.”

Nixon says they expect as many as 1,100 Ukrainian newcomer households may need rent support through the program.
