Protesters occupying a camp established by a First Nation in northern Alberta to defy drilling operations on its traditional lands have been ordered to vacate.
The Woodland Cree First Nation set up the camp near Peace River to oppose Obsidian Energy’s expansion plans, citing concerns about earthquakes and lack of consultation.
The company obtained an injunction to remove protesters, but Chief Isaac Laboucan-Avirom says they will stay until negotiations resume.
Obsidian claims to have consulted with the First Nation, but tensions remain high.
The RCMP is monitoring the situation, hoping for a peaceful resolution.
Laboucan-Avirom is determined to protect his community’s rights and land, even if legal action is necessary.
