An important source of water in the Grimshaw area is getting some extra protection.
The Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance has been working with the Province and several municipalities on a water protection plan for the Grimshaw gravels aquifer.
Adam Norris, the Watershed Coordinator for the MPWA, says their main focus is to prevent contamination of the water.
“We’re working with some of the agricultural producers, Ag services boards, Peace Country Beef and Forage Association, to try to ensure that producers out there are using their best management practices. That they can continue to do their farming and also that we’re not impacting water through their operations.”
The municipalities involved in the plan are the Town of Grimshaw, Village of Berwyn, MD of Peace, MD of Fairview, Clear Hills County and the County of Northern Lights.
Norris says they’ve been working closely with them and Alberta Environment Parks in implementing it.
“They’re trying to align their bylaws to make sure there’s protection in place around things like gravel pits, oil and gas well drilling, that sort of thing. There’s a big component where we’re trying to engage landowners. What people do and put in their yards and where that drains could potentially impact an aquifer.”
The Aquifer is an underground source of water that many communities and residents in the areas use wells to access.
