The Alberta Legislature is back in session this week.
Mental Health and Addictions Minister and Peace River MLA Dan Williams says he’ll be looking to continue his work on the “Alberta Recovery Model” for drug addictions.
“We think those suffering from addiction ought to get treatment. We need them off the streets, not threatening our community members because their speed-balling methamphetamine and fentanyl and fencing with the wind with a used syringe on main street in Peace River or downtown Calgary or Edmonton. Instead, those people deserve help. They deserve care and health care ought to help them get healthy.”
Williams says this includes the $35 million investment into a recovery community in Grande Prairie for addictions treatment in the Northwest.
Another priority for Williams will be looking at trying to have more housing starts happening locally.
“Peace River I think is set to continue to grow and boom over the next decade. A lot of what we’re doing is working with municipalities and trying to make sure we reduce all red tape possible. We’re doing our part in government. We’ve reduced a massive amount of red tape, not only in the last term from 2019-2023, but also in this term we’re reducing even more.”
Williams says they need to have more housing to help meet the demand of the province’s population growing.
