Pioneers, Renegades Fall Short Over Weekend; Former Plays First Home Game on Thursday

A couple of match-ups went in the Mighty Peace Football League (MPFL) over the weekend.

It was a close game, but the Peace River Pioneers fell short, as they lost 19-14 to the Cats in Whitecourt.

Pioneers Head Coach Hayden Gust told the Trending 55 Newsroom that it was a tough loss for the team.

“That’s especially considering that Whitecourt scored their final touchdown within the last minute to leap ahead of us,” said Gust. “That made it a little tougher.

“As well, we do have a smaller squad this year,” he continued. “We’re also dealing with some injuries, but we’re hoping to get through it, and then bounce back on Thursday.”

Thursday, September 28, 2017 is when they’re scheduled to host the Valleyview Cougars at 4 PM.

“Watching the Cougars, it looks like they move fast,” said Gust. “The team doesn’t mind tackling, and their special teams look very good. So, yes, I do expect a good game against Valleyview, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Gust says he’s looking forward to seeing the crowd come out for the team’s first home game of the season.

The High Prairie Renegades didn’t have much luck either last Friday.

The team’s still in search of their first win, as they fell 20-14 at home to the Grande Prairie Warriors.

High Prairie has the weekend off; They play their next game on Thursday, October 5, when they head to St. Joseph Catholic High School in Grande Prairie at 5 PM to play against the Celtics.
