It has been 15 years since the local Peace area snowmobile club, the Peace Valley Snow Riders, started their work to be “Part of the Solution”. This work focused on developing formal snowmobile trails to direct snowmobilers to areas of acceptable use, and again the Club has been recognized for their work. At the Alberta Snowmobile Association (ASA) Awards of Excellence Banquet in Edmonton on October 19th, the Club received the Mighty Peace Zone Club of the Year Award for 2024. This is the 5th time this Club has been recognized with this award, having also received it in 2010 (one year after the Club was formed), 2013, 2014 and 2020.
In the past this award recognized the development of trails and the growth in membership however it was noted that this recognition was different. In February of 2024, the Club hosted the ASA Executive Director and Board Members for a ride and lunch on the Zavisha Smith Mills Trail and a portion of the Canfor Hines Creek Trail. In addition to experiencing our excellent trails, these guests were impressed with the interpretative signage installed along the route that provided information on the forest industry. This signage was funded by the sponsorship of Zavisha Sawmills Ltd. in association with the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta. Although there was little snow last winter, the day of the ride had perfect conditions which were enhanced by the organization and preparations of the local Club members.
As acceptance of formal snowmobile trails in our area continues to increase, the Club encourages all snowmobilers to join in the Club’s success by becoming a member. ASA has initiated a change this season with all memberships (annual or day passes) only being available online at https://albertasnowmobile.ca/.
