Peace River’s Downtown Spray Park Reopen After Weekend Vandalism

The Spray Park located in Peace River’s downtown area will remain up and running today.

It had been closed down for four days after vandalism was discovered by town employees in the morning of Friday, August 25, 2017.

“There are valves on the front that manage the water flow for the front area of the park,” said Town Communications Coordinator Autumn Hulme. “And it also impacts how the water flows into the back area as well.

“And they’re all capped with a green cabinet,” she continued. “So, somebody kicked off the cabinet and did substantial damage to the valves on the inside, so they had to be rebuilt and reinstalled.”

Hulme told the Trending 55 Newsroom that it took several days for the parts to come in. But on Tuesday, the needed parts had arrived. After that, she says it didn’t take workers long to get the job done. The park reopened soon after.

Even still, Hulme calls the vandalism a senseless act.

“This is a community resource,” she said. “The town may own and operate it, but it really does belong to the community, and the people of the town pay into it. And it’s really kind of tragic for somebody decides to go in and damage something like that during the summer. It’s just terrible.”

Hulme says it remains an open case, and that police are continuing their investigation into what happened.
