Peace River Firefighters hold 2nd annual Rooftop Campout

On the evening of November 2nd, Peace River fire fighters will be  spending the night on Peace River Tim Hortons’ rooftop. They will be braving the cold to raise money for muscular dystrophy. The firefighters will be staying there for a full 24 hours starting at 6pm.

Last year, Peace River raised $6,600 and their goal for this year is $35 thousand. However, Peace River Firefighter’s Association vice president, Travis Mitten, says that they will be  just as proud if they can reach 10 to 15 thousand.

Mitten says that they have chosen to brave the winter to support Peace River’s residents who are living with muscular dystrophy and hope that people will come out to support the cause. They are raising funds through Muscular Dystrophy Canada, an organization that has raised over 85 million dollars in support of the tens of thousands of  Canadians who have neuromuscular disorders.

The coordinator for this year’s and last year’s Rooftop Campout, Peace River Volunteer Firefighter Sabbir Zahed says he’s proud to be part of an event that supports those living with muscular dystrophy and receives such a positive reaction from the community. Zahed adds the event brought a lot of awareness to the disease during their event last year.

“We can not change the world overnight, but at least we can do something. That’s our aim,” says Zahed.
