The Alberta 55 Plus Games will be in the Peace Region next year.
Peace River Community Services Director, Tanya Bell, told council she was told that the joint bid was chosen as the winning bid for the games, which will be next August.
The joint bid involved: the Town of Grimshaw, the MD of Peace, County of Northern Lights, and Northern Sunrise County.
Mayor Tom Tarpey says he is looking forward to welcoming the competitors to town.
“The over-55 athletes, the weekend warriors the master’s athletes, we are excited,” says Tarpey.
Tarpey adds there having the games is an economic shot in the arm for Peace River, and the region.
“Baby boomers will be coming to town and ready to spend money so we are looking forward to both the competition and the economic boost in the arm,” says Tarpey.
Elected officials from: the Town of Grimshaw, the MD of Peace, County of Northern Lights, and Northern Sunrise County are excited about the games coming to our region.

“Northern Sunrise County is pleased to hear that we’ve been selected to host the 2021 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games with our municipal partners in August 2021. “The County of Northern Lights is very excited to be part of the successful regional bid committee for the 55+ games. This is a great opportunity to bring participants from all corners of the province to our region and be treated to northern hospitality and experience all of our splendour. The town is expecting around 900 competitors to take part in competition such as: track and field, bocce, contract bridge, cribbage, military whist, floor curling, cycling, floor shuffleboard, golf, 8 ball pool, horseshoes, slo-pitch, soccer, swimming, tennis, pickleball, and crafts and photography.
