The Peace Country Regional Science Fair wrapped up today, and students from all over the region received awards and recognition at the award ceremony this morning. The projects included studies such as how Wi-Fi affects plants, creating natural insulation to be as effective as synthetic insulation, and which drink stains your teeth the most and the fastest.
The categories of projects were Biotechnology, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, Health and Life Sciences, and Physical, Earth and Chemical Sciences. Special and grand awards were given, such as awards of excellence in each of the categories, and Best in Fair.
The students who won Best in Fair were Brayley Etmer and Amara Drefs for their project titled “3R-Value.” The three R’s standing for Responsibility for the environment, Reuse and Recycle. Their project was about finding out if they could make a natural insulation which was as comparable or equally effective as synthetic insulation.
“I have a kitty condo at my house for my cats, and each one has a different insulation inside,” says Amara. “Because it was minus 40 this winter, we wanted to see which one they would go into, and which would be the least detrimental to their health.”
Five of the students who participated in the fair are going to Ottawa for the Canada-Wide Science Fair. One of those students is Peace River’s own Izzy Shewchuk. Izzy’s project was called “Sun Protection is so Degrading,” which won the Award of Excellence in Health and Life Sciences.
“This is my 4th year in regionals and I have been working toward going to nationals,” Says Izzy. “I am pretty excited that I qualified.”
The Canada-Wide Science Fair is May 12 – 19, 2018 in Ottawa.
