Parental Consent To Be Required For Name And Pronoun Changes At School

Premier Danielle Smith has announced a raft of changes affecting transgender people in the Peace Region, including requiring parental consent for students 15 and under who want to change their names or pronouns at school.

Parents of children aged 16 and 17 will not need to consent to the changes but will need to be notified.

In a social media post yesterday, Smith said the changes came after discussions with her United Conservative Party caucus.

Parents will also be given the choice to opt their children out of classroom discussions and instruction on gender identity, sexual orientation or human sexuality.

Smith is slated to hold a news conference on the topic this afternoon.

Alberta becomes the third province to announce a parental consent requirement in schools, after similar rules were introduced in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick.

Some Alberta NDP MLAs have spoken out in opposition of the policy with leader Rachel Notley saying that she will have more to say on this topic later today.
