NDP Says Budget Doesn’t Address Affordability Concerns

The NDP Critic for Fiscal Reponsibility says the provincial budget failed to address affordability concerns for many Albertans.

Samir Kayande says that many people were hoping to see wages keep up with inflation, but were disappointed.

“There’s a broken promise on tax cuts which means that the one key affordability measure that Danielle Smith’s party was talking about prior to the election in order to get elected, is actually not there. Then there’s also extra fees for everything that government provides and as well you wrap that up in the fact that there’s under-investment in health care and education.”

Kayande says a lack of funding for health care is one area of concern.

“Are they going to be shutting down emergency rooms in Edmonton and Calgary? No. Where that comes out is out of you guys who are out of the big centres where not only do your closed emergency rooms have a tough time reopening, but there might be more trouble in the future just in order to save costs in the face of rapidly increasing demand.”

With Alberta’s population projected to keep increasing, Kayande says spending should’ve kept pace to help maintain services in health care and education.
