With most school boards in the province saying they won’t pilot the K-6 draft curriculum, the NDP Opposition is renewing calls for it to be scrapped.
Education Critic Sarah Hoffman says this along with criticism from First Nation and Metis groups, education experts, teachers and parents means the province should go back and rework the draft curriculum.
“In my opinion, it would be wise for the minister to take that feedback and go back to create something that’s factually correct, that is modern and where students can see themselves in the curriculum and prepare them for their studies and the world of work.”
Hoffman was on the Trending 55 Hot Seat and says that the province should be working with some of the groups who criticized the curriculum to make it more accurate.
“When so many indigenous leaders were saying no right off the bat, they also said we want to work with you to make sure that it’s accurate and that it’s a quality document that all Alberta students should be learning from. The government hasn’t these partners up on their offers to date and they definitely tried to ram all this through under the cover of COVID.”
Of the 61 school districts in the province, 56 of them refused to pilot any part of the curriculum.
