The NDP opposition has put forward a bill in the legislature to provide 10 days of paid sick leave to Albertans who are ill or in quarantine.
Labour Critic Christina Gray was on the Trending 55 Hot Seat and says similar legislation has been done in other Provinces.
“Ontario, BC, Manitoba and Nova Scotia, you’ll notice that those are Conservative, Liberal and an NDP Province. It’s not a partisan issue, this is something that just works and helps people to do the right thing and stay home, particularly given that the federal Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit program hasn’t been very good.”
Gray says their bill would see all costs of that being paid by the provincial and federal governments.
She adds that this bill would be beneficial for low income workers.
“Those financial difficulties like having to pay rent and having to be able to put food on the table are some of the reasons why sometimes you see people going into work when they’re not feeling well. We’ve learned through the number of waves during COVID-19 that if we work together as a community and support each other, we can get through this.”
