Grant money is being given to a relatively new program at Northwestern Polytechnic.

$195,000 is part of the Results Driven Agriculture Research grant geared at protecting honey bees at the National Bee Diagnostic Center in Beaverlodge, for the next two years.

The funding is to be used to advance research examining a known parasite risk to honey bee colonies and resistance to common treatments.

This money is a collaborative research effort that will bring together scientists, beekeepers from across Canada, regulatory agencies, as well as federal and provincial government partners, and will help inform future trade and policy decisions.

Beekeeping and colonies are becoming quite popular in the Peace and Mackenzie regions, with over 40% of the production in Canada, coming from Alberta.

Researchers and students are hoping that this funding will advance treatment technologies to keep hives and the production thriving for a longer period of time.

The Manager of the National Bee Diagnostic Center in Beaverlodge, as well as the Acting Dean of Applied Research and Innovation with Northwestern Polytechnic, ius Patricia Wolf-Viega.
