Arnold Viersen, Member of Parliament for Peace River–Westlock, has been appointed to the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs.

This committee is responsible for examining matters related to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

MP Viersen expressed his honour at the appointment by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.

He highlighted the committee’s history since its creation in 2006 and its studies on issues affecting veterans, such as the establishment of a veterans’ ombudsman and support services for veterans’ families.

Viersen criticized the current government’s handling of veterans’ affairs and expressed concern over instances where veterans were offered assisted death instead of necessary support.

He stated that one of his first priorities would be to initiate a study on mental health and suicide prevention for veterans, emphasizing that Canada’s veterans and their families deserve better.
