Affordable child-care is getting more accessible in Alberta with the expansion of the Space Creation Grant.
Children and Family Services Minister Searle Turton says this will allow private child-care operators to get more spaces in their facilities.
“Private operators right across the entire province of Alberta are extremely excited about this. This grant is going to open up over 22,500 new private spaces and it’s going to get us closer to reaching our goal of reaching over 65,000 additional day-care spaces right across the province. It’s a huge win for parents.”
$28 million is being allocated through the grant with recipients getting up to $1,350 for family day home agencies and up to $6,000 for facility-based programs for each new space created.
Turton says this will get more spaces in high-need and high-demand communities.
“Minister Williams (Peace River MLA Dan Williams) has told me quite passionately about the need for additional child care spaces in the Peace Country and so this grant is really going to be focused on those areas that are “child care deserts” where there really isn’t options for moms and dads to be able to have safe, affordable and inclusive day-care spots for their kids.”
Turton says this will bring Alberta closer to achieving the goal of an average of $10 per day child care by 2026.
