Misery Mountain Ski Hill in Peace River has shut down for the rest of this season.

After operating at a deficit every day this season, Misery Mountain’s Board of Directors made the executive decision to close for the rest of the ski and snowboard season.

Financial issues were only one of many the ski hill faced. President of Misery Mountain Ski Area, Jacy Knott says it was also the weather. “We’ve had issues with the snow… if we don’t have snow we can’t have people on the hill, that’s our basic need for operating.”

Snow-making capabilities posed a problem for the hill; not reaching the chairlift side to be able to open runs and the groomer breaking a track once their top T-bar opened.

Season pass holders with Misery Mountain are getting deferred until next season. “They’ll be able to come next year at no cost.” Knott said. “Our membership was low this year, but because of Covid and regulations, we’ve had lower numbers for people buying season passes.” Knott commented they understand why as the top hill wasn’t open and public health restrictions at the beginning of the season.

Knott spoke on behalf of Misery Mountain saying they apologize for having to end the year short and not being able to hold their annual Slush Cup event as well. “Any of the profits that we made from last season (2020-2021), which was a weird season just because there was nothing else to do, we just needed to shut down and start re-planning for next season and try to make the best of it.”

With financial issues at a peak Misery Mountain is still holding their online cash raffle with an added 50/50 despite the bad news. The cash raffle ends on June 24, 2022 with the 50/50 is being drawn on March 12, 2022!
