A new basketball league in the region, the Mighty Peace Basketball League, is getting ready to begin play in the spring.

The president of the league, Nicholas Gagnon, says he wanted to get a competitive league for basketball started in the area.

“There’s drop-in for anyone that can go, but there’s not a league where guys still want to play with their buddies where it’s competitive and there’s refs and scores and this and that. So it was trying to get everyone involved that can work with me here, and once I had that it was like “OK, let’s see what we can do here and let’s see if there’s interest” and we decided to give it a shot and here we are.”

Gagnon says they’re going to be starting out small but are hoping they can get enough interest to expand.

“We wanted to do a short season. We’re planning to have six teams and then do a six game regular season and two game playoffs and there will be a champion and hopefully if there’s enough interest in the fall, we would like to expand. Right now it’s at Mile Zero in Grimshaw, we would like to expand possibly if we can get some schools in Peace River and we’d like to get a women’s league.”

Gagnon says long term they would like to have teams in different towns like Fairview, Manning and Valleyview.
