Here’s the highlights from the MD of Peace Council meeting held on June 11, 2024:

Fire Services Agreement
Council approved a Fire Services Agreement between the MD of Peace and the Village of Berwyn, in which the MD of Peace provides fire services for the Village of Berwyn.

Village of Berwyn Funding Agreements
Council approved a funding agreement between the MD of Peace and the Village of Berwyn that outlines costs for various services provided by the two municipalities. The MD of Peace provides the Village of Berwyn with an annual viability assistance payment that increases by 4% every year to reflect the cost of living increases, funding for MD residents to access recycling bins, and funding for MD of Peace youth to access recreation facilities located in the Village of Berwyn. Under the agreement, the MD of Peace also provides weed inspection services for the Village of Berwyn free of charge.

Gravel Hauling Tender Selection

Council reviewed tenders received for gravel loading and hauling and awarded Grimshaw Gravel Sales Ltd. the 2024 contract.

Education Funding Advocacy

MD of Peace Councillors reviewed a media release by the Alberta Teachers’ Association regarding the impact of education funding cuts that impact school boards and students in our region. According to the media release, Holy Family Catholic Regional Division (HFCRD) will experience a $221,112 reduction in funding. Council moved to write a letter to Premier Danielle Smith, and Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides expressing concern regarding the funding cuts and to send a copy of the letter to neighboring municipalities, HFCRD and the Alberta Teachers’ Association.

Council Attendance at Upcoming Conferences

Council discussed and appointed councilor attendance at the Stronger Together Library Conference, the PREDA Annual General Meeting and Value Added Forestry Conference, the Mighty Peace and Slave Watershed Forum and the Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance AGM.

Meeting Agendas

Council approved the MD of Peace Council meeting agenda formats as amended. The MD of Peace holds a daytime meeting on the second Tuesday of every month starting at 9:00 a.m. and an evening meeting every fourth Tuesday starting at 5:00 p.m., with the exception of July, August and December.

Berwyn Agriculture Society Donation

Council reviewed a request from the Berwyn Agriculture Society for funding for their Cash and Cans event on July 5 and 6, 2024, and approved to provide $500 in financial support.
