Premier Jason Kenney has this reminder for Albertans amid concerns of the spread of the coronavirus and plunging oil prices.
“We are resilient,” states Kenney. “We have gotten through bigger challenges in the past, and we will get through this one together.”
Kenney was speaking to reporters on Monday about a barrel of crude oil having its biggest single-day decline since the early 1990’s.
The Alberta budget is based on the price of crude being $58 USD per barrel, and prices currently sit at approximately $32 USD per barrel.
The virus has also contributed to sharp declines on the TSX and Dow Jones Industrial.
Kenney said in his press conference that the government intends to pass the budget, which was introduced last month but acknowledges the effects the coronavirus and slumping crude prices will have on Alberta’s finances.
“The fiscal plan is obviously going to be affected by these massive developments in the global economy and in energy prices,” says Kenney.
Kenney also says he will seek input from Opposition Leader, Rachel Notley, and leaders from other parties not currently occupying a seat in the legislature.
