The Town of High Level has been approved to be part of an immigration program designed to
assist employers with addressing their labour shortage needs.
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program – Rural Renewal Stream offers eligible foreign
workers the opportunity to immigrate to designated communities across Alberta as a provincial
nominee with the formal support of the local municipality.
The designation is accessible by employers and businesses located within High Level only.
Employers in northern Alberta often experience difficulties in filling positions within their
organizations; sometimes job vacancies are never filled. The Rural Renewal Stream is intended to
help alleviate some of these difficulties by accelerating the process of immigrants entering
Canada and coming to designated communities (such as High Level) to fill a job they have been
hired for.
“This is a great opportunity for the Town to directly support local employers in receiving some
much needed help that can be so difficult to find in the north,” said Mayor Crystal McAteer. “At
the same time, it allows High Level to grow the diversity of our community and showcase what
we have to offer in the north on a global stage.”
The Rural Renewal Stream program is an opportunity for employers in High Level to hire foreign
nationals with valid temporary status within Canada, or foreign nationals living abroad looking to
immigrate to Canada within a shorter time period than is typical under other available Federal or
Provincial immigration programs.
The Rural Renewal Stream is an opportunity to bring newcomers into the community who will be
the right fit for the required position. The Rural Renewal Stream also presents the Employer with
the possibility of an Endorsed Candidate staying on with the business on a permanent basis once
they’ve obtained Permanent Resident through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program.
Employers based in High Level will have the ability to attract, recruit, and retain newcomers. The
Town’s role includes endorsing candidates to fill job vacancies with employers approved by the
Town, and to meet with endorsed candidates throughout their first year of settlement in High
Level.
The Government of Alberta has several criteria for both prospective candidates and employers.
The Town requires that employers play an active role in ongoing newcomer settlement into the
community.
The Town of High Level has set up a new section on its website to assist candidates and
employers in navigating High Level’s Rural Renewal Stream Program.
