High Level Fire Department’s 2020 Annual Firefighters awards were presented a little differently this year. Awards for Firefighter of the Year and Rookie of the Year were voted on by HLFD members, and the winners were notified on January 12, 2021.

Director of Protective Services and Fire Chief, Rodney Schmidt says “These awards are typically given out during the annual Firefighter’s Ball.” Schmidt said “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and waiting for restrictions to clear while reducing exposure, the awards were presented over a Zoom meeting.”

The recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award went to Andrea Dyck. She joined the department in May 2020 and worked through Level 1 fire qualifications and completed the Emergency Medical Responder Program. Schmidt recalled “Andrea was one of the highest rookie attendees for call-outs and training while always showing up to do her best.”

Captain Colin Moore is the recipient for Firefighter of the Year. Moore joined the department back in summer of 2019 after working at other departments over several years. Moore earned the rank of Fire Captain in November 2020. “Colin’s hard work and dedication gained respect to and from other members of the crew,” said Schmidt.

Both Dyck and Moore received their awards during a small ceremony at the High Level Fire Hall on January 18, 2021.
