On Feb. 10, 2022, High Prairie RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) initiated an investigation into a shooting that took place in Whitefish Lake First Nation, Alta. As a result of the investigation, a search warrant was obtained for a residence located on Whitefish Lake First Nation. This warrant was executed on Mar. 4, 2022 by High Prairie RCMP GIS, with the assistance of High Prairie Police Dog Services and High Prairie RCMP Members.
As a result of this search warrant, the following was seized from the residence:
· A quantity of crystal methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl
· A sawed off .22 calibre rifle, sawed off 30-06 rifle and sawed off Winchester Model 840 shotgun
· A quantity of ammunition
· 4 false government identifications and counterfeit Canadian currency
Shawn Evan Cardinal (23 yrs) of Whitefish Lake First Nation, Alta., is charged with:
· Discharge firearm with intent
· Unauthorized possession of a firearm (x2)
· Possession of a scheduled substance (x2)
· Careless use of a firearm
· Pointing a firearm
· Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose (x2)
· Assault causing bodily harm
· Fail to comply with release order (x2)
· Criminal negligence causing bodily harm
Following a judicial hearing, Shawn Cardinal was remanded into custody and is scheduled to attend High Prairie Provincial Court on Mar. 14, 2022.
Nicholas Anderson-Kootenay (26 yrs) of Edmonton, Alta., is charged with:
· Possession of weapon contrary to order (x6)
· Careless use of a firearm
· Unauthorized possession of a firearm (x2)
· Possession of a scheduled substance (x2)
Following a judicial hearing, Nicholas Anderson-Kootenay was released on bail and is scheduled to attend High Prairie Provincial Court on Mar. 28, 2022.
Lacey Jane Laboucan (34 yrs) of Whitefish Lake First Nation, Alta., is charged with:
· Possession of a scheduled substance (x2)
Lacey Jane Laboucan was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to attend High Prairie Provincial Court on Apr. 11, 2022.
Mara Catherine Morgan (24 yrs) of Edmonton, Alta., is charged with:
· Careless use of a firearm
· Unauthorized possession of a firearm (x2)
· Possession of property obtained by crime (x3)
· Fail to comply with release order
· Possession of counterfeit money
Following a judicial hearing, Mara Catherine Morgan was released and is scheduled to attend High Prairie Provincial Court on Mar. 28, 2022.
