For the second time this year, wildfires have forced people in Chateh to be evacuated from their homes.

The Basset Fire southeast of the community started moving north, resulting in evacuations being issued on Friday.

Evacuation orders from the Dene Tha’ First Nation are telling residents to go to the High Level Sports Complex where an emergency shelter and reception centre have been set up.

This is the second time in five months that the community of around 1,500 people has been evacuated.

Fires in the spring forced people out of their homes back in May, until the community was deemed safe for re-entry in early June.

Alberta’s 511 highway website says that even though Highway 58 to the community is closed, evacuees from Chateh are being permitted access but must proceed to High Level.
